What is a denture?
Dentures are prosthetic devices designed to replace missing teeth. Dentures can replace a single tooth or all of your teeth, depending on your needs. The ADA reports that approximately 25% of all adults 65 and older will lose all of their natural teeth: dentures allow you eat and smile with confidence.
Dentures can be made from either acrylic or metal. A “complete” or “full” set replaces all teeth in either the upper or lower jaw. A “partial” denture fills in for one or more missing teeth.
How soon can I get dentures after my teeth are removed (extracted)?
Many dentists offer “immediate” dentures that allow you to get a set of dentures immediately after your teeth are extracted. Often these immediate dentures need to be relined (adjusted) or replaced within three to six months because your mouth will change after the extraction.
Will dentures make me feel different?
Once you get used to dentures, they actually may make you feel more confident. Modern dentures can give you a great natural smile and they support your cheeks and lips – which can make you look as much as 10 years younger.
Will my new Arizona dentures be uncomfortable?
It may take a while for you to become comfortable with your dentures. Within a few months, you should become comfortable with your dentures and be able to eat and talk without any difficulties.
How long will it take for me to get used to my dentures?
Typically, we suggest taking an average of 1 week for every decade old you are as an estimate for time it may take to get used to your new dentures.
Can I eat with dentures?
Yes, dentures are suggested as a replacement of your natural teeth. Eating will take some practice and we suggest starting with very soft foods and slowly working your way back to your normal diet. Make sure you take small bites and try chewing on both sides at the same time to prevent your dentures from moving. We also suggest avoiding very hard, crunchy, or chewy foods as these can break, crack, or move your dentures.
Will dentures change how I speak?
It may be difficult to speak at first, but with practice you should be back to normal. You may want to consider reading and counting out loud (to yourself, your plants, or your pets) to practice speaking with your dentures in Arizona.
How long should I wear my dentures?
You should discuss this with your dentist. When you’re getting used to your dentures it may be helpful to sleep with them in for the first few nights, however, it depends on your specific situation and what your dentist recommends.
Will I need to use a denture “glue”?
You should never need to use a denture “glue” or fixative. If you find that your dentures are loose or not fitting properly, you should contact your dentist promptly to see if you need an Arizona denture reline. While new dentures may slip or become loose when you talk, eat, cough, or laugh, this should remedied after some time has passed. If you’re just noticing that your denture is becoming loose, that is reason to call your dentist because it can cause some serious problems for your mouth.
Loose dentures can often be remedied with a quick denture reline in Arizona, or a denture adjustment.
Is there anything I need to do to take care of my mouth?
You will need to take good care of your mouth since you are still at risk for other oral diseases. You should brush your mouth, cheeks, gums, and palate with a soft-bristled brush twice a day. You should also make sure you’re cleaning your dentures as your dentist recommends.
Be sure to watch the fit of your AZ dentures and make note of any tenderness or sores that may occur in your mouth. If you notice anything unusual, call your dentist.
Do I need to clean my dentures?
Yes. You should make sure you clean all of the surfaces of your dentures with a gentle cleanser and soft brush. Take care of your dentures as if they were your natural teeth, they will collect food debris and stains with daily use.
How do I care for my dentures?
Clean your dentures daily. Make sure to use a soft brush and a gentle cleanser, staying away from any hard abrasives. When you have your dentures out, make sure you handle them over a folded cloth, dentures can break or crack even if dropped from a few inches. You should NEVER use bleach on your dentures as it can lighten the color of the gums – if you notice stains, see your dentist. And you should never allow your dentures to dry out: when not in use, soak them in a denture cleansing solution or water: based on what your dentist recommends.
Check your AZ dentures regularly for loose teeth, chips, and cracks, if you notice any of these, you should contact your dentist immediately and not wear your dentures. Wearing broken dentures can cause irritation, painful sores, and serious mouth problems.
Now that I have dentures, do I still need to see my dentist?
Yes. Regular check-ups with your Arizona dentures dentist and having your dentures professionally cleaned are extremely important in keeping your teeth, gums, and mouth healthy. Plus, since dentures don’t last forever, it’s good to have your dentist check them and their fit to make them last as long, and be as comfortable, as possible.
Are dentures my only option?
No, you may also want to consider implants. You need to discuss all options with your dentist. You can ask your dentures dentist of all the Arizona dentures services they offer. Be sure to ask your dentist all of your questions: they are the experts in the field. If you aren’t sure, consider getting a second opinion. Many dentists (like us) offer free second opinions.
Is there anything I should avoid with my dentures?
You should avoid very hard, crunchy, or chewy foods that can crack or chip your dentures. You should also avoid abrasive cleansers and bleaching agents as these can cause grooves, weakening, or odd bleaching patterns. Never put your dentures in hot water.
Will my dentures get stained? What can I do about this?
Just like your natural teeth, your dentures can be stained if exposed to smoking or drinking lots of tea, coffee, or red wine. Brushing your dentures daily will help avoid staining. If you do notice that your dentures are getting stained, talk to your Arizona dentures dentist. There are things they can do to help remove the stains.
